Sensory Based Motor Skills

These allow for stabilization, moving, or planning a series of movements in response to sensory demands. For optimal performance, these skills require intact:
  • Proprioception- The sense that tells us where our body parts are in relation to each other and how much force our muscles need to generate to accomplish a movement.
  • Vestibular System- The sense that tells us where we are in space. This allows a person to perceive their body position in the dark or with their eyes closed.
Children need enough control of their bodies to accomplish functional tasks such as dressing, playing outside, and writing at school. Intact sensory based motor skills allow a child to use sensory information to execute unfamiliar and multi-stepped movements.
