Candy Corn Fine Motor Challenges!
10.12.2015
Candy Corn is a yummy Halloween treat that is also a great fine motor manipulative. We have had lots of fun this year with Candy Corn! We used both real candy corn as well as candy corn mini-erasers. Here are five Candy Corn Fine Motor Activities that are sure to be a Halloween hit!
1. Sensory Fun!
Fill a bowl full of candy corn and hide Halloween objects inside. Kids LOVE the feel of candy corn as they dig through the bowl as they improve their tactile discrimination and kinesthetic awareness.
2. Candy Corn Maze Paths!
Print this FREE Halloween Themed Candy Corn maze. Use delicate touch and quick movements to accurately release candy along the paths from the start to the finish. You can use a stop watch to time the child. Have the child race to beat their time in the remaining paths.
3. Fine Motor Challenge (Get Your Fingers Ready!!!)
This is a fun fine motor dexterity game that will get those fingers moving!
To prepare for the game, press the bottom to flatten the surface of each candy corn so they will stand upright. First lay the candy corn on its side. Start the timer. As fast as possible, the child is to flip the candy corn so that it is standing upright. When that row is finished, stop the timer and record the time on the score board.
4. Tongs and Tweezers Fun!
Use tongs or tweezers to place the specified number of candy corn on each jar. We used candy corn erasers and tongs. Try using strawberry hullers!
The use of small tweezers and larger tongs provides opportunities for the development of prerequisite skills required for scissor use.
This resource addresses number awareness and encourages:
- Resistance and strengthening
- Development of the arches of the hand
- Skilled control of the radial fingers (thumb, index, and middle fingers)
- Stabilization of the ulnar fingers (ring and little fingers)
5. Hole Punch Candy Corn Decorating
Using a hole-punch and colored paper, punch out the specified number of circles and glue them onto the candy corn image as indicated.
Using a hole-punch is another great fine motor strengthening tool. It provides opportunities for the development of foundation skills required for scissor use, pencil grasp, and other tools.
